(Colorized by historycrunch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CAUSES OF WORLD WAR I<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>World War I began in June of 1914, and is considered to have five major causes that led to the outbreak of the war.\u00a0 These five causes include the four\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/long-term-causes-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"708\">long-term causes<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/militarism-as-a-cause-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"712\">militarism<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/alliance-systems-before-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"723\">alliances<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/imperialism-as-a-cause-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"739\">imperialism<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/nationalism-as-a-cause-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"750\">nationalism<\/a>) and one short-term cause (the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/assassination-of-franz-ferdinand\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"779\">assassination of Franz Ferdinand<\/a>).\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The four long-term causes each occurred in the years and decades before the actual outbreak of World War I, and all combined to set the stage for war in 1914.&nbsp; Most people think of these as the \u2018MAIN\u2019 causes of World War I.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bMilitarism\u00a0can best be understood as the buildup or expansion of the ability of a country\u2019s military to wage war.\u00a0 In the decades before World War I many European countries began to practice militarism and worked to expand and strengthen their military forces.\u00a0 For example, there was an intense arms race and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/naval-race-before-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"719\">naval race<\/a>\u00a0between several European nations in the buildup to World War I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Militarism-as-a-Cause-of-World-War-I-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Militarism as a Cause of World War I\" class=\"wp-image-1406\" style=\"width:914px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Militarism-as-a-Cause-of-World-War-I-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Militarism-as-a-Cause-of-World-War-I-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Militarism-as-a-Cause-of-World-War-I-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Militarism-as-a-Cause-of-World-War-I.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Militarism was one of the M.A.I.N. causes of World War I, alongside alliances, imperialism and nationalism.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The second long-term cause of World War I was the\u00a0system of alliances\u00a0that existed in the years before the outbreak of war in 1914.\u00a0 When World War I began Europe divided between two separate alliance systems.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/britain-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"828\">Britain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/france-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"836\">France<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/russia-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"842\">Russia<\/a> made up the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/triple-entente-and-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"736\">Triple Entente<\/a>\u00a0while <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/germany-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"877\">Germany<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/austria-hungary-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"870\">Austria-Hungary<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/italy-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"839\">Italy<\/a> made up the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/triple-alliance-and-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"733\">Triple Alliance<\/a>.\u00a0 Both sets of alliances were created in the years and decades before World War I between the partnering countries.\u00a0 The assassination of Austro-Hungarian archduke <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/franz-ferdinand\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1025\">Franz Ferdinand<\/a> and the resulting crisis between Serbia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire caused each system of alliances to enact and World War I began. (Created by historycrunch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The third main cause of World War I was European\u00a0imperialism\u00a0that occurred in the 1800\u2019s and early 1900\u2019s before World War I erupted in 1914.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/age-of-imperialism\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"8356\">Imperialism<\/a> is understood as a process in which a country overtakes another country or region\u2019s political, economic or social life.\u00a0 Imperialism was carried out by the powerful European nations against the rest of world in the decades before World War I began.\u00a0 For example, in the 19th century European nations carried out massive campaigns of imperialism against the regions of Africa in an event known as the\u00a0Scramble for Africa.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/scramble-for-africa-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2229\">Scramble of Africa<\/a> led to the start of World War I because it increased rivalry between the European nations as they fought against each other for territory in Africa and control over different regions.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth and final long-term cause of World War I was the growth of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/nationalism-as-a-cause-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"750\">nationalism<\/a>\u00a0that occurred in Europe in the decades before World War I and the tensions it caused.\u00a0 Nationalism is best understood as when a group of people identify with each other and display a loyalty to their nation or country.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bNationalism grows when people share similar beliefs, values, ethnic heritage, relationship to land, language, culture and customs.&nbsp; Nationalism was a major cause of World War I because it caused tensions and unrest to grow in certain parts of Europe.&nbsp; For example, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was not made up of one single nation, but rather consisted of many different groups.&nbsp; Many of these groups sought to have control over themselves and wanted sovereignty from the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.&nbsp; This created a great deal of unrest in the empire.&nbsp; This was especially apparent in the Balkans, which is a region in Southeast Europe that contains many different nation-states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Long-Term-Causes-of-World-War-I-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Long-Term Causes of World War I\" class=\"wp-image-1520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Long-Term-Causes-of-World-War-I-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Long-Term-Causes-of-World-War-I-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Long-Term-Causes-of-World-War-I-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Long-Term-Causes-of-World-War-I.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">There were four M.A.I.N. causes of World War I, including: militarism, alliance systems, imperialism and nationalism.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ASSASSINATION OF FRANZ FERDINAND<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/franz-ferdinand\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1025\">Franz Ferdinand<\/a>\u00a0was the Archduke of Austria-Hungary and the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne in the years before World War I.\u00a0 Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were\u00a0assassinated\u00a0on June 28th, 1914 in Sarajevo, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia and Herzegovina while there on a visit to inspect the military forces.\u00a0 The assassin was a Serbian nationalist named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/gavrilo-princip\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1028\">Gavrilo Princip<\/a>.\u00a0 Just nineteen years old at the time, Princip was a member of the\u00a0Black Hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/black-hand-and-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"770\">Black Hand<\/a> was a Serbian nationalist organization that existed in the early part of the 20th century. WORLD WAR I<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/home-front-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1016\">home front<\/a>\u00a0was a major aspect of World War I and played a key role in the history and significance of the war.\u00a0 The home front involved the societies for the different nations involved and the issues faced by the citizens who did not fight in the front lines of World War I.\u00a0 For instance, all of the countries involved in World War I were impacted on the home front in different ways.\u00a0 With that said, there were some similar issues faced by all of the nations involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bFirst, civilians suffered due to battles that affected cities and towns across the battlefields of Europe.&nbsp; For example, the trenches of the Western Front stretched through areas across Belgium and northeastern France, including through farms, towns and cities.&nbsp; This displaced numerous people in the region and led to casualties among the civilian populations of Europe.&nbsp; Another issue for civilian populations was the lack of resources.&nbsp; Each country prioritized its resources for the front-line soldiers, which meant that people on the home front sometimes suffered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bOther impacts on the home fronts of World war I, included: the changing <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/role-of-women-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1045\">role of\u00a0women<\/a>, the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/propaganda-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1022\">propaganda<\/a> and the use of conscription (mandatory military class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">END OF WORLD WAR I<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bThe end of World War I occurred due to a variety of factors.\u00a0 As stated above, the arrival of the United States on the Western Front was a major factor.\u00a0 American soldiers, alongside other Allied troops (Britain, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.) were able to push forward during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/hundred-days-offensive-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"968\">Hundred Days Offensive<\/a>\u00a0and force the German Army back from the trenches of northern France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combined with the push of the Allied forces was the downfall of the Central Powers as a military force in Europe.\u00a0 In fact, the other\u00a0Central Powers\u00a0(Austria-Hungary, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/bulgaria-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"874\">Bulgaria<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/ottoman-empire-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"880\">Ottoman Empire<\/a>) all pulled their forces from the war before Germany.\u00a0 This effectively left Germany as the final Central Power fighting against the Allied Powers on its own.\u00a0 This was, obviously, an unsustainable situation for Germany and resulted in the German government seeking an armistice, which occurred on November 11th, 1918 at 11am.\u00a0 With this World War I was over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter it was the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/treaty-of-versailles\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"897\">Treaty of Versailles<\/a>\u00a0that truly ended the war.\u00a0 The treaty was a document that ended the war between the\u00a0Allied Powers\u00a0(Britain, France and the United States) and the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary).\u00a0 The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28th, 1919 in the Hall of Mirrors at the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/palace-of-versailles\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2751\">Palace of Versailles<\/a> in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div the signing of the Treaty of Versailles were: <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/woodrow-wilson\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"903\">Woodrow Wilson<\/a> of the United States, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/david-lloyd-george\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9363\">David Lloyd George<\/a> of Britain and <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/georges-clemenceau\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9358\">Georges Clemenceau<\/a> of France.\u00a0 Each leader had their own view on how to handle the end of World War I and to what degree Germany should be punished.\u00a0 In general, both Britain and France wanted to punish Germany while Woodrow Wilson proposed a different path with his famous \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/woodrow-wilsons-fourteen-points\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"906\">Fourteen Points<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure
