He was believed to have brought agriculture, writing, and civilization to the Aztecs. As such, historians consider Quetzalcoatl to be one of the most important <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/aztec-gods\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2373\">Aztec gods<\/a>, and was even a celebrated figure throughout other civilizations of Mesoamerica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AZTEC GODS \u2013 OVERVIEW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept of \u2018god\u2019 in\u00a0Aztec\u00a0society is referred to as \u2018Teotl\u2019 in Nahuatl, the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/aztec-language-and-writing\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2352\">language of the Aztec<\/a>.\u00a0 The Aztecs, like other Mesoamerican societies, had a wide pantheon of gods.\u00a0 The gods in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/aztec-religion\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2392\">Aztec religion<\/a>\u00a0represented different aspects of life and the world for the Aztec people.\u00a0 The aspects that the gods represented included: <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/aztec-culture\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2317\">culture of Aztec<\/a> society and Mesoamerica, nature and the natural world, creation stories, fertility, food, death and the underworld, trade and excess or entertainment.\u00a0 Each god had different attributes and personality traits and were usually represented in distinct ways by the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/aztec-empire-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2287\">Aztec<\/a>.\u00a0 Some could take human or animal form and were celebrated in festivals and rituals.\u00a0 There were many\u00a0gods in the Aztec religion\u00a0but some of the most prominent included:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/huitzilopochtli-aztec-god\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2376\">Huitzilopochtli<\/a>,\u00a0Quetzalcoatl,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/tezcatlipoca-aztec-god\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2386\">Tezcatlipoca<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/mictlantecuhtli-aztec-god\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2380\">Mictl\u0101nt\u0113cuhtli<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/tlaloc-aztec-god\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2389\">Tlaloc<\/a>, and Chicomec\u014d\u0101tl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Culture-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Aztec Culture\" class=\"wp-image-5708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Culture-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Culture-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Culture-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Culture.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gods and religious traditions were an important part of Aztec culture.  This image from the Codex Borbonicus, shows the Aztec gods: Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">QUETZALCOATL &#8211; SUMMARY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Quetzalcoatl, whose name means \u2018feathered serpent\u2019, was another main god of the Aztec and played a significant role in Aztec history.\u00a0 For instance, he was considered the god of wind and wisdom or learning.\u00a0 Quetzalcoatl was an important god throughout Mesoamerican history and societies and was not just related to the Aztecs.\u00a0 For example, there is evidence of the celebration of Quetzalcoatl by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/teotihuacan\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2310\">Teotihuacan<\/a>\u00a0people near the 1st century AD.\u00a0 Furthermore, a \u2018feathered serpent\u2019 was an important figure of many different Mesoamerican cultures in the centuries that followed.\u00a0 These other cultures referred to him in other names, but the imagery of a feathered serpent was always constant.\u00a0 As well, throughout many of these cultures, including the Maya, the feathered serpent represented the planet Venus.\u00a0 It was the Aztec who referred to him as Quetzalcoatl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Aztecs, he was considered a god of creation, as he is credited with creating humans as explained in the Aztec creation stories.\u00a0 Quetzalcoatl may have also played a significant role in the\u00a0Spanish conquest of the Aztecs\u00a0in the early 16th century.\u00a0 For example, some historians have suggested that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/moctezuma-ii-aztec-emperor\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2427\">Moctezuma II<\/a>, the Aztec leader at the time of the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/spanish-conquest-of-the-aztec-empire\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2455\">Spanish conquest<\/a>, may have believed that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/hernan-cortes\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2465\">Hern\u00e1n Cort\u00e9s<\/a>\u00a0was Quetzalcoatl.\u00a0 Cort\u00e9s was the Spanish conquistador who led the conquest against the Aztec.\u00a0 Cort\u00e9s and his troops arrived at the edge of the Aztec territory in 1519, the same year that Quetzalcoatl was said to return to bring peace to the Aztec Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on this theory, some historians have argued that this is why Cort\u00e9s and just 500 Spanish soldiers were able to overthrow the Aztec Empire.\u00a0 Supposedly, Moctezuma II was unsure of how to respond to Cort\u00e9s and the other Spanish conquistadors because their arrival into the Aztec territory coincided with the\u00a0Aztec prophecy in relation to the Mesoamerican god Quetzalcoatl.\u00a0 The prophecy spoke of Quetzalcoatl\u2019s arrival at the same time as the Spanish, and Quetzalcoatl was said to have white skin.\u00a0 Unsure of whether or not Cort\u00e9s was the god, Moctezuma II responded by greeting him with honor and giving him many gifts.\u00a0 Having been let into <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/tenochtitlan\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2296\">Tenochtitlan<\/a>, Cort\u00e9s then took Moctezuma II captive and led the collapse of the Aztec Empire.\u00a0 The idea that Moctezuma II believed Cort\u00e9s may have been the returning Quetzalcoatl is controversial and not all historians agree.\u00a0 Regardless, Quetzalcoatl was an important god in <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Society-Social-Classes.jpg\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"5707\">Aztec society<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Gods-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Aztec Gods\" class=\"wp-image-5700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Gods-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Gods-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Gods-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Gods.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Artistic representation of Aztec gods, which played an important role in Aztec society and daily life.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Quetzalcoatl was one of the most significant Aztec gods.
