He strengthened the Aztec capital by organizing its government, expanding its military, and initiating large-scale construction projects like temples and canals. His reign was significant because it set the stage for future development of the Aztec Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EARLY HISTORY OF THE AZTEC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the\u00a0Aztec\u2019s\u00a0founding and construction of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/tenochtitlan\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2296\">Tenochtitlan<\/a>\u00a0in the Valley of Mexico in 1325 AD, they quickly established their authority across the other societies in the valley.\u00a0 Historians refer to this time period as the Aztec Empire, since the Aztec were constantly expanding throughout central Mexico.\u00a0 As well, for the two centuries that followed the initial construction of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec were ruled over by a series of leaders referred to as Huey Tlatoani.\u00a0 In the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/aztec-language-and-writing\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2352\">Aztec language<\/a> of Nahuatl this translates to &#8216;Great Speaker&#8217;.\u00a0 Each huey tlatoani ruled in different ways but they all oversaw the expansion of both Tenochtitlan and the Aztec Empire until the arrival of the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/spanish-and-aztec-meet\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2478\">Spanish conquistadors in 1519<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Map-of-the-Aztec-Empire-and-Aztec-Triple-Alliance-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Map of the Aztec Empire and Aztec Triple Alliance\" class=\"wp-image-4388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Map-of-the-Aztec-Empire-and-Aztec-Triple-Alliance-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Map-of-the-Aztec-Empire-and-Aztec-Triple-Alliance-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Map-of-the-Aztec-Empire-and-Aztec-Triple-Alliance-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Map-of-the-Aztec-Empire-and-Aztec-Triple-Alliance.png 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Map of the Aztec Empire and Aztec Triple Alliance by History Crunch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ACAMAPICHTLI (AZTEC EMPEROR) &#8211; BIOGRAPHY AND SIGNIFICANCE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first Aztec ruler of the city of Tenochtitlan was Acamapichtli.\u00a0 In the language of the Aztecs, called Nahuatl, he was referred to as the tlatoani or \u2018one who speaks\u2019.\u00a0 Essentially, the tlatoani was the leader of the Aztecs and Acamapichtli is considered to be the first in a line of eleven total tlatoanis that ended with the arrival of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/hernan-cortes\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2465\">Hernan Cort\u00e9s<\/a>\u00a0and other Spanish conquistadors in the first part of the 16th century.\u00a0 Acamapichtli is best remembered today for establishing the Aztec Empire and growing the strength and wealth of Tenochtitlan.\u00a0 He became ruler in 1376 following the death of Tenoch, the Aztec leader who founded the city of Tenochtitlan in 1325.\u00a0\u00a0Just as in other parts of the world at that time, the heritage of the Aztec leader was extremely important to the society and region around Lake Texcoco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acamapichtli had an advantage as leader because his father was a Mexica (Aztec) leader and his mother was the Culhuacan nobility since she was the daughter of a Culhuacan king.\u00a0 This connection to the Culhuacan was important because the Culhua nobility were considered to be direct descendent of the\u00a0Toltecs.\u00a0 Among the Mesoamerican cultures of the Valley of Mexico the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/toltec\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2313\">Toltecs<\/a> were considered to be an important earlier Mesoamerican society that was exceptionally civilized.\u00a0 As such, it was considered important for the Mesoamerican civilizations of the time to establish a connection to the Toltecs.\u00a0 The Aztecs in particular, considered the Toltec civilization to be the predecessor to their own empire.\u00a0 Acamapichtli further established his connection to the Toltec when he married a Culhua royal princess.\u00a0 Despite his prestige and power, Acamapichtli struggled to expand the Aztec empire out from under the control of its neighboring societies, such as the Tepanec.\u00a0 Regardless, Acamapichtli improved Tenochtitlan in several key ways, including: building up the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/aztec-food-and-farming\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2348\">chinampa<\/a> \u2018floating garden\u2019 system around the city to improve agriculture, and building temples and public buildings.\u00a0 Acamapichtli died in 1395 and was succeeded by his son Huitzil\u00edhuitli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Farming-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Aztec Farming\" class=\"wp-image-5715\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Farming-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Farming-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Farming-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Aztec-Farming.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Artistic representation of Aztec chinampas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Acamapichtli was the first Aztec Emperor, which was referred to as the huey tlatoani (Great Speaker).
