In fact, he promoted classical studies in France and played a key role in founding the Coll\u00e8ge de France to support humanist education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GUILLAUME BUDE &#8211; EARLY LIFE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Guillaume Bud\u00e9 was a French\u00a0scholar\u00a0and significant figure during the European\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/renaissance\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"48\">Renaissance<\/a>.\u00a0 He was born in Paris, France on January 26th, 1467 in the midst of the Renaissance which had first began in Italy and later spread to Northern European areas such as France, England the Germanic Kingdoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a young man he studied law at the University of Orleans in France.&nbsp; This helped lead to his contributions to the Renaissance in France. For instance, the ideals of the Italian Renaissance and&nbsp;humanist&nbsp;values spread to France in the 15th century, during the lifetime of Guillaume Bud\u00e9.&nbsp; He is most famous for writing extensively about the importance of ancient writing on matters related to law and finance.&nbsp; For instance, he argued against using interpretations of ancient texts and instead suggested that the original Greek or Roman texts should be studied and used alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GUILLAUME BUDE &#8211; RENAISSANCE HUMANSIM<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, he was the royal secretary to King Francis I of France, who was vitally important to the establishment of the Renaissance in France.\u00a0 Francis I is credited with sparking the French Renaissance because he was a patron of the arts and inspired several prominent Italian artists to come to France.\u00a0The best example of this is when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/leonardo-da-vinci-renaissance-artist\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2550\">Leonardo da Vinci<\/a>\u00a0went to France and brought with him the famous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/mona-lisa-painting-by-leonardo-da-vinci\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2564\">Mona Lisa<\/a> painting.\u00a0 The Mona Lisa remains in France to this day in the Louvre Museum in Paris.\u00a0 Guillaume Bud\u00e9 helped convince Francis I to establish the Collegium Trilingue, which was a school that was heavily inspired by Renaissance Humanist <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/erasmus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2577\">Erasmus<\/a>.\u00a0The Collegium Trilingue was founded to help spread humanist ideas in France and Northern Europe, and focused on teaching ancient languages, such as: Greek, Roman and Hebrew.\u00a0 In fact, Bud\u00e9 and Erasmus often corresponded with each other in letters.\u00a0 They are both viewed as prominent scholars of the Renaissance and helped to expand both Renaissance and Humanist ideas at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bud\u00e9 is also credited with managing the National Library of France (Biblioth\u00e8que nationale de France) for Francis I.&nbsp; He helped to fill the library with many different manuscripts with a focus on humanist beliefs.&nbsp; To this day, the National Library of France remains one of the world\u2019s greatest libraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Mona-Lisa-Painting-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Mona Lisa Painting\" class=\"wp-image-6479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Mona-Lisa-Painting-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Mona-Lisa-Painting-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Mona-Lisa-Painting-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Mona-Lisa-Painting.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8216;Mona Lisa&#8217; by Leonardo da Vinci. (Between 1503 and 1506)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GUILLAUME BUDE &#8211; RENAISSANCE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bud\u00e9 is today remembered for his role in the Renaissance it is important to understand the basic history of this famous historical event.\u00a0 The Renaissance is an important event in European history that stretched from the 14th century to the 17th century.\u00a0 It was preceded by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/middle-ages\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"46\">Middle Ages<\/a>\u00a0in Europe and eventually led to the major events of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/age-of-enlightenment-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3848\">Age of Enlightenment<\/a>.\u00a0 In historical terms the Renaissance is important because it led to a major shift in European thought and worldview.\u00a0 The most significant changes that emerged as a result of the Renaissance can be seen in European architecture, art, literature, mathematics, music, philosophy, politics, religion and science.\u00a0 Intellectual thought in these fields flourished during the timeframe of the Renaissance and led to many people questioning long held beliefs about each.\u00a0 This created an environment of discovery and curiosity in which new ideas were constantly being introduced and tested.\u00a0 One such new idea or worldview that developed during the time of the Renaissance was called humanism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main features of the Renaissance was the rediscovery by European thinkers of ancient Greek and Roman ideas and texts.\u00a0 For example, the term \u2018renaissance\u2019 in French means \u2018rebirth\u2019.\u00a0 This is in relation to the idea that the intellectual culture of the Renaissance was sparked by the rediscovery of these ancient philosophies and ideas which had largely been ignored in Europe throughout the Middle Ages.\u00a0 Many of these ancient texts were preserved by Islamic and Jewish cultures in the Middle East and were not rediscovered by Europeans until the time of the Renaissance.\u00a0 More specifically, famous Italian Renaissance scholar and humanist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/petrarch\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2580\">Petrarch<\/a>\u00a0is remembered for rediscovering the earlier work of Roman philosopher Cicero.\u00a0 Later scholars such as Erasmus and Bud\u00e9 are credited with helping to spread the humanist ideas out of the Italian peninsula and into northern Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Petrarch-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Petrarch\" class=\"wp-image-6467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Petrarch-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Petrarch-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Petrarch-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Petrarch.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo of a statue of Petrarch on the Uffizi Palace, in Florence, Italy.
