{"id":2716,"date":"2016-06-28T06:35:20","date_gmt":"2016-06-28T06:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/?p=2716"},"modified":"2026-02-23T17:49:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T17:49:09","slug":"french-revolution-overview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/french-revolution-overview\/","title":{"rendered":"French Revolution: A Detailed Overview"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/french-revolution\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"44\">French Revolution<\/a>\u00a0was a major event in the history of Western societies, and had a profound effect on the world today.\u00a0 Beginning in 1789, the French Revolution saw the French people overthrow their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/absolute-monarchy\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4007\">absolute monarchy<\/a>\u00a0and bring about a republic that was based on the principles of equality, liberty and fraternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FRANCE BEFORE THE FRENCH REVOLUTION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/france-before-the-french-revolution\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2713\">Before the French Revolution<\/a>, French society was structured in the relics of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/feudalism\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4039\">feudalism<\/a>, in a system known as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/estates-system-of-france-french-revolution\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2707\">Estates System<\/a>.\u00a0 The estate to which a person belonged was very important because it determined that person\u2019s rights and status in society.\u00a0 Usually a person remained in one estate for his or her lifetime, and any movement from upwards in the estate system could take many generations.\u00a0 The first estate was the clergy, the second estate was the nobility and the third estate was the peasants.\u00a0 While the peasants made up the vast majority of the people in French society, over 96%, they lacked any political or economic power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1789, this began to cause anger amongst the peasant class, as many of them began to question the authority of their monarch,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/louis-xvi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2730\">Louis XVI<\/a>.\u00a0 Additionally, several other elements combined to cause the French Revolution to begin.\u00a0 For example, in the decades before the French Revolution, Europe was being transformed by the\u00a0Age of Enlightenment.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/age-of-enlightenment-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3848\">Enlightenment<\/a> involved an intellectual movement, in which famous thinkers and philosophers challenged some of the basic foundations of society, including: role of the government, basic human nature, sources of authority and ideas centered on liberty.\u00a0 These new ideas cause people in France to begin questioning the role and authority of Louis XVI and inspire French commoners to work to overthrow their absolute monarch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Causes of the French Revolution - Video Infographic\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DvK2m-WStgY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; It shows the events of the Tennis Court Oath in the French Revolution.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">STORMING OF THE BASTILLE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, the French Revolution took a violent turn when the Parisian citizens carried out the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/storming-of-the-bastille\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2760\">storming of the Bastille<\/a>.\u00a0 The Bastille was a prison fortress in Paris that the French monarchy used to store weapons and imprison enemies of the state.\u00a0 For many the Bastille symbolized the king\u2019s absolute authority.\u00a0 On July 14, 1789 a Paris mob stormed the Bastille and demolished it brick by brick with their hands. \u00a0Considered by many historians to be the \u201cspark\u201d of the French Revolution, the storming of the Bastille was a significant event because it saw the third estate citizens successfully challenge the authority of Louis XVI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Storming of the Bastille in the French Revolution - Video Infographic\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mgqgpRdIYOs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF MAN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, on August 26th, 1789, the National Assembly adopted the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/declaration-of-the-rights-of-man-and-of-the-citizen\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2697\">Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen<\/a>.\u00a0 The Declaration was written by Marquis de Lafeyette, a French military officer who fought in the\u00a0American Revolution\u00a0and was inspired by the ideals of liberty expressed by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence.\u00a0 The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was vitally important to the French Revolution because it directly challenged the authority of Louis XVI. For example, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen set out a series of individual rights protected by law.\u00a0 Today, many historians view the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen as an important document in both the history of the French Revolution and the history of\u00a0democracy\u00a0and individual rights in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Declaration-of-the-Rights-of-Man-and-of-the-Citizen-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen\" class=\"wp-image-5558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Declaration-of-the-Rights-of-Man-and-of-the-Citizen-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Declaration-of-the-Rights-of-Man-and-of-the-Citizen-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Declaration-of-the-Rights-of-Man-and-of-the-Citizen-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Declaration-of-the-Rights-of-Man-and-of-the-Citizen.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PARISIAN WOMEN MARCH TO VERSAILLES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The next major event of the French Revolution saw a mob a\u00a0Parisian women march to the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/palace-of-versailles\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2751\">Palace of Versailles<\/a>\u00a0in order to force the royal family to return to Paris.\u00a0 Louis XVI and his family had left Paris for Versailles earlier on in the revolution.\u00a0 On the 5th of October 1789, the group of working class women were protesting the price of bread and on the 6th of October they marched from Paris to Versailles to confront the king.\u00a0 Upon arriving, the women killed several of the king\u2019s guards and forced the royal family to return to Paris with them.\u00a0 From this point on, Louis XVI and his family were effectively held prisoners by the revolutionaries and citizens of France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Returned to Paris, Louis XVI and his wife&nbsp;Marie Antoinette&nbsp;were held prisoners in the Tuileries Palace, while the revolutionaries transformed the country.&nbsp; The National Assembly had passed the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen which had limited the authority of Louis XVI.&nbsp; Seeing his power dwindle, and fearing the continued growth of the revolutionaries, Louis XVI and his family attempted to flee the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Palace-of-Versailles-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Palace of Versailles\" class=\"wp-image-5576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Palace-of-Versailles-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Palace-of-Versailles-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Palace-of-Versailles-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Palace-of-Versailles.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8216;Palace of Versailles&#8217; by Pierre Patel. (1668)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LOUIS XVI AND FAMILY TRY TO FLEE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bOn the night of June 20th, 1791, Louis XVI, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/marie-antoinette\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2733\">Marie Antoinette<\/a> and their children\u00a0fled the Tuileries Palace\u00a0to try to make it to Austria, in order to gather support from Marie Antoinette\u2019s country of birth.\u00a0 The family snuck out of the palace in Paris disguised as servants and took a carriage throughout the French countryside towards France\u2019s border with Austria.\u00a0 When the carriage arrived in the small French town of Varennes, it was stopped by a town official and the royal family was recognized.\u00a0 The revolutionaries forced Louis XVI and his family to return to Paris and removed the little remaining authority he still had.\u00a0 Louis XVI was, from that point on, viewed as a traitor to the revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/French-Revolution-Summary-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"French Revolution Summary\" class=\"wp-image-5544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/French-Revolution-Summary-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/French-Revolution-Summary-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/French-Revolution-Summary-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/French-Revolution-Summary.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Return of the Royal Family to Paris following the &#8216;Flight to Varennes&#8217;. (Unknown Artist)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EXECUTION OF LOUIS XVI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/national-convention-french-revolution\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2748\">National Convention<\/a> took\u00a0over power from the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/legislative-assembly-french-revolution\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2725\">Legislative Assembly<\/a> and was much more radical in nature.\u00a0 As such, the National Convention moved quickly to put Louis XVI on trial.\u00a0 Louis XVI was charged with treason due to his attempt to flee the country and was convicted by the National Convention.\u00a0 The famous revolutionary,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/maximilien-robespierre\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2736\">Maximilien Robespierre<\/a>, commented that \u201cLouis must die so the nation may live.\u201d\u00a0 Louis\u2019 punishment was death and on, January 21st, 1793,\u00a0Louis VXI was beheaded by <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/guillotine-and-the-french-revolution\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2721\">guillotine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Louis-XVI-Quote-1.jpg\" alt=\"Louis XVI Quote 1\" class=\"wp-image-5591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Louis-XVI-Quote-1.jpg 960w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Louis-XVI-Quote-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Louis-XVI-Quote-1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">REIGN OF TERROR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the months that followed, the National Convention declared war against several European nations, including: Britain, the Dutch Republic and Spain.\u00a0 As well, the National Convention created the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/committee-of-public-safety-in-the-french-revolution\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2692\">Committee of Public Safety<\/a>\u00a0in April of 1793, which was tasked with protecting the new French republic against foreign attack and internal revolts.\u00a0 However, the Committee of Public Safety would be best known for its role in the\u00a0Reign of Terror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/reign-of-terror-in-the-french-revolution\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2757\">Reign of Terror<\/a> occurred from September of 1793 until July of 1794, and was a time period of extreme violence and paranoia.\u00a0 The more radical revolutionaries, the Jacobins, were concerned that foreign and internal groups would threaten the revolution and used their power to stop any perceived threat.\u00a0 The paranoia would cause the deaths of tens of thousands with most being beheaded by guillotine.\u00a0 It was during this time that the queen, Marie Antoinette was tried and executed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Reign of Terror in the French Revolution - History Crunch Investigates\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FWRe3Q-yz9Y?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; It was at this time that Maximilien Robespierre began is own rise to power within the revolution.&nbsp; For many months throughout 1794, Robespierre battles against other revolutionaries in the National Convention in relation to each of their loyalties towards the revolution itself.&nbsp; It is during this time that many prominent revolutionaries within the National Convention are guillotined for their perceived betrayal to the revolution and Robespierre maneuvers his way to the head of the convention.&nbsp; Finally, on June 4th, 1794, Robespierre is elected the president of the National Convention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robespierre then declared a new religion called the Supreme Being and carried out a series of celebrations based around the new faith.\u00a0 On June 8th, 1794, Robespierre oversaw the Supreme Being Festival in Paris that would be celebrated based on a new calendar.\u00a0 Some members of the National Convention and Committee of Public Safety were visibly upset with the celebration and the actions of Maximilien Robespierre.\u00a0 In fact, Robespierre had begun to make many enemies within the revolution after he claimed to have a list of people that were enemies of the revolution.\u00a0 By threatening to release the names, Robespierre angered others who began to work against him and accuse him of acting like a <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/dictatorship\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4020\">dictator<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the actions of Robespierre the National Convention voted to arrest him.&nbsp; On July 28th, 1794, soldiers stormed into where Robespierre was staying.&nbsp; As the soldiers arrived, Robespierre attempted to commit suicide by gunshot to the head, but was instead only injured in the jaw, shattering it.&nbsp;
