{"id":2815,"date":"2019-09-30T07:06:54","date_gmt":"2019-09-30T07:06:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/?p=2815"},"modified":"2026-02-12T23:24:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T23:24:10","slug":"gettysburg-address","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/gettysburg-address\/","title":{"rendered":"Gettysburg Address: A Detailed Summary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The&nbsp;Gettysburg Address in 1863 is considered to be one of the most important Presidential speeches in American history.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/abraham-lincoln\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2805\">Abraham Lincoln<\/a> was the 16th President of the United States and served in office from March 4th, 1861 until April 15th, 1865 when he was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/abraham-lincoln-assassination\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2808\">assassinated<\/a>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/john-wilkes-booth\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2839\">John Wilkes Booth<\/a>.&nbsp; As President, Abraham Lincoln led the country through some of its most conflicted moments.&nbsp; For instance, he was President during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/american-civil-war\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"30\">American Civil War<\/a>, which saw the Northern states (Union) face off against the Southern states (Confederacy) in a series of bloody battles.&nbsp; \u200bLincoln\u2019s Gettysburg Address in 1863 was one of the most memorable moments of his presidency during the Civil War and highlighted the tensions facing the country at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ABRAHAM LINCOLN &amp; THE CIVIL WAR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Civil War is one of the most significant events in the entire history of the United States.&nbsp; It occurred from 1861 until 1865 and saw the Northern states (Union) engage in a series of bloody battles with the Southern states (Confederacy).&nbsp; Lincoln played an incredibly significant role throughout the history of the Civil War.&nbsp; For instance, as President of the United States, Lincoln played an important part in the Union\u2019s military response, including appointing generals and discussing military strategy.&nbsp; His main motive at the time was to reunify the country and end the rebellion of the Confederacy as quick as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, during the years of the Civil War, Lincoln made several significant contributions to American history.&nbsp; First was the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/emancipation-proclamation\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2811\">Emancipation Proclamation<\/a>, which was a presidential proclamation from Abraham Lincoln that legally freed millions of slaves living in the Southern Confederate states.&nbsp; It took effect on January 1st of 1863, in the midst of the Civil War.&nbsp; Another significant event in 1863 was the Gettysburg Address.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Abraham-Lincoln-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Abraham Lincoln\" class=\"wp-image-4907\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Abraham-Lincoln-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Abraham-Lincoln-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Abraham-Lincoln-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Abraham-Lincoln.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8216;Abraham Lincoln&#8217; by George Peter Alexander Healy. (1887)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gettysburg Address was a dedication ceremony for a soldier\u2019s cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.&nbsp; Lincoln\u2019s speech there has since become one of the most famous Presidential speeches in American history.&nbsp; In the famous speech, Lincoln expressed the idea that the Battle of Gettysburg was a significant event in protecting the unity of the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He made links to the Declaration of Independence and discussed the idea of American freedom being at the center of the Union\u2019s actions in the Civil War.&nbsp; For instance, he famously stated that \u201cthat these dead shall not have died in vain\u2014that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom \u2014and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth\u201d in reference to the Union soldiers who died in the Battle of Gettysburg.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gettysburg Address was a relatively short speech at just 271 words.&nbsp; However, it has become one of the most famous presidential speeches in American history and is still studied to this day.&nbsp; In fact, it is inscribed on the Lincoln Memorial. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate\u2014we can not consecrate\u2014we can not hallow\u2014this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.
