{"id":2970,"date":"2016-04-08T07:25:09","date_gmt":"2016-04-08T07:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/?p=2970"},"modified":"2026-03-09T06:33:02","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T06:33:02","slug":"joseph-stalin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/joseph-stalin\/","title":{"rendered":"Joseph Stalin: A Detailed Biography"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Joseph Stalin is one of the most famous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/dictatorship\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4020\">dictators<\/a>\u00a0from the 20th century.\u00a0 He ruled over the Soviet Union as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/communism\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3914\">communist<\/a>\u00a0dictator from 1924 until his death in 1953.\u00a0 As such, Stalin led the Soviet Union through several major world events, such as:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/world-war-ii\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"21\">World War II<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/cold-war\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"31\">Cold War<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/korean-war\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"27\">Korean War<\/a>.\u00a0 Today, he is remembered\u00a0as a brutal dictator who was responsible for the death of over 20 million people.\u00a0 For instance, he imprisoned millions of his own people in gulags (labor camps), carried out devastating\u00a0purges and caused the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/holodomor-ukraine-famine\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2957\">Ukraine Famine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">JOSEPH STALIN &#8211; EARLY LIFE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph Stalin was born on December 18th, 1878, in Gori, Georgia. Georgia was a country that was located between Eastern Europe and West Asia, but was still part of the Russian Federation.&nbsp; He was born Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili and began using the name Joseph Stalin in his early 20\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At an early age, his father struggled with alcoholism and the left Joseph and his mother.\u00a0 Soon after, Stalin gained a scholarship to a seminary school in order to study to become a priest.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t finish with the school and instead became an atheist.\u00a0 After he left the seminary school he began reading the writings of <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/vladimir-lenin\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"675\">Vladimir Lenin<\/a> and joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party which practised <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/marxism\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3955\">Marxism<\/a>.\u00a0 The group would eventually form into the Bolsheviks under the leadership of Lenin, which Stalin also joined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of his membership in the Social Democratic Labour Party, he often found himself in trouble with Russian authorities and was sent to Siberia several times as punishment.\u00a0 When\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/world-war-i-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1043\">World War I<\/a>\u00a0broke out, Stalin was drafted into the Russian Army but did not serve due to a badly injured arm that he had hurt as a child.\u00a0 During the course of World War I, Russia suffered a massive loss of life which negatively impacted the morale of the country.\u00a0 As such, the Marxist movement led by Vladimir Lenin gained strength and popularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Joseph-Stalin-Young-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Joseph Stalin Young\" class=\"wp-image-6293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Joseph-Stalin-Young-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Joseph-Stalin-Young-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Joseph-Stalin-Young-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Joseph-Stalin-Young.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo of Joseph Stalin in 1902. (Enhanced by historycrunch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">JOSEPH STALIN &#8211; RUSSIAN REVOLUTION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, Russia was led by a tsar, which was the title for the Russian absolute monarchs before 1917.\u00a0 Tsar <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/tsar-nicholas-ii\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"669\">Nicholas II<\/a> ruled over Russia before and during the first parts of World War I.\u00a0 The mounting Russian casualties and lack of supplies led to an increased amount of anger directed at the Tsar and his handling of the Russian war effort.\u00a0 At the same time, Russia was a society that was sharply divided and the poorest Russians struggled to survive day-to-day.\u00a0 Poverty was widespread, especially among Russian peasants, who worked for the landowning nobility.\u00a0 This all combined to set the stage for a <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/russian-revolution-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"704\">revolution<\/a> against the Tsar and his rule over Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1917, Vladimir Lenin led a series of revolts against Tsar Nicholas II.\u00a0 Soon, Tsar Nicholas II and his family were imprisoned and Lenin and the Bolsheviks assumed power over Russia.\u00a0 For his part, Stalin assumed control of the Communist Party Newspaper \u2018Pravda\u2019 or \u2018Truth\u2019 and used the paper to publicly support Lenin and the Bolsheviks\u2019 actions in the country.\u00a0 In the years following the Russian Revolution and the resulting civil war, Stalin worked his way up into a leadership position within the Communist Party established by Lenin.\u00a0 By 1922, Lenin had appointed Stalin General Secretary, which allowed him the ability to begin appointing close allies to positions of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in 1922, Lenin suffered a series of strokes.&nbsp; As a result he essentially retired from the leadership role and Stalin gained more control.&nbsp; However, it was during this time that Lenin began to grow suspicious towards Stalin.&nbsp; Lenin was critical of Stalin\u2019s political views and the methods he was using to maintain power.&nbsp; In fact, Lenin wrote a \u2018Testament\u2019 in which he criticized Stalin\u2019s leadership and argued that he should be removed from the position of General Secretary.&nbsp; However, Stalin and his allies prevented Lenin\u2019s testament from being presented to others in the Communist Party.&nbsp; Lenin died of another stroke on January 21st, 1924.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Russian-Revolution-Lenin-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Russian Revolution Lenin\" class=\"wp-image-1054\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Russian-Revolution-Lenin-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Russian-Revolution-Lenin-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Russian-Revolution-Lenin-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Russian-Revolution-Lenin.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin speaking in Moscow in May of 1920. (Colorized by historycrunch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">JOSEPH STALIN &#8211; THE DICTATOR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Lenin\u2019s death there was a power struggle in the Soviet Union between Stalin and his allies and <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/leon-trotsky\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"680\">Leon Trotsky<\/a>, a trusted ally of Lenin.\u00a0 Stalin eventually isolated Trotsky within the power structure of the Soviet Union and forced him into exile.\u00a0 Stalin\u2019s rise to power was complete as he centralized all power in the Soviet Union under himself and ran the country as a\u00a0Communist\u00a0dictatorship. (Colorized by historycrunch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the remaining years of his life he would he was the dictator of the Soviet Union through several key events, including: the&nbsp;Ukraine Famine,&nbsp;World War II, and the&nbsp;Cold War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/holodomor-ukraine-famine\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2957\">Ukraine Famine<\/a>, which is also known as the Holodomor, was a period of starvation caused by the policies of Joseph Stalin in 1932 and 1933 in the country of Ukraine.\u00a0 The famine was caused when Stalin collectivized the farms of ethnic Ukrainians and seized stores of grain for use in industrializing the Soviet Union.\u00a0 Many historians view the famine as a result of actions taken of Stalin and therefore categorize the event as <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/genocide-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2950\">genocide<\/a>.\u00a0 It is estimated that between 2.5 to 7.5 million people died of starvation during the Ukraine Famine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Ukraine-Famine-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Ukraine Famine\" class=\"wp-image-6282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Ukraine-Famine-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Ukraine-Famine-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Ukraine-Famine-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Ukraine-Famine.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Chicago&#8217;s American front page showing the terrible effects of the Holodomor.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">JOSEPH STALIN &#8211; WORLD WAR II &amp; THE COLD WAR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Stalin\u2019s involvement in <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/world-war-ii\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"21\">World War II<\/a> was also very important.\u00a0 He allied the Soviet Union with both France and Britain in the face of growing German nationalism and aggression in Central Europe.\u00a0 However, just before the start of the war,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/adolf-hitler\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2935\">Adolf Hitler<\/a>\u00a0and Stalin agreed to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/molotov-ribbentrop-pact\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3417\">non-aggression pact<\/a>, which allowed Stalin to better prepare his country for the industrial needs of war at that time.\u00a0 The non-aggression pact between the two nations ended after Hitler decided to invade the Soviet Union in 1941. This immediately turned Stalin into an enemy of Hitler and the Soviet Union joined forces with the other Allied nations against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/nazi-germany\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"47\">Nazi Germany<\/a>.\u00a0 Stalin remained leader over the Soviet Union throughout the entire history of World War II, and led the Soviet Union to victory against Nazi Germany.\u00a0 For instance, the war in Europe ended in 1944 when Soviet troops defeated Nazi Germany in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/battle-of-berlin-in-world-war-ii\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3562\">Battle of Berlin<\/a>.\u00a0 To learn more about World War II and Stalin\u2019s role in the war, click on the links above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/cold-war\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"31\">Cold War<\/a>\u00a0occurred immediately following the end of World War II and saw the Soviet Union face off against the United States in a war of ideologies that last for 45 years.\u00a0 Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union in the early years of the Cold War and played a significant role in Cold War events such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/berlin-blockade\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3137\">Berlin Blockade<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/berlin-airlift\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3142\">Berlin Airlift<\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/korean-war-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3097\">Korean War<\/a>.\u00a0 This was significant because it saw Joseph Stalin face off against the United States.\u00a0 In particular, Stalin and American President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/harry-truman\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3218\">Harry S.
