It took place in 1943, in the Warsaw Ghetto, which had been established in 1940 to imprison over 400,000 Jews in horrific, overcrowded conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHAT WAS THE HOLOCAUST?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/holocaust-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3305\">Holocaust<\/a>\u00a0is one of the most important events of the 20th century and is perhaps the most significant <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/genocide-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2950\">genocide<\/a> in human history.\u00a0 In total, over 11 million people were executed during the Holocaust, including: Jewish, Gypsies, disabled, Polish, etc.\u00a0 In general, the Holocaust unfolded as a series of stages, with the creation of the\u00a0ghettos\u00a0being one of the first key stages.\u00a0 After passing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/nuremberg-laws\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3333\">Nuremberg Laws<\/a>, which restricted the rights of Jewish people in Germany, the Nazis forcibly removed Jewish people and transported them into ghettos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Nuremberg-Laws-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Nuremberg Laws\" class=\"wp-image-5313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Nuremberg-Laws-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Nuremberg-Laws-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Nuremberg-Laws-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Nuremberg-Laws.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jewish people during the events of the Holocaust. (Colorized by historycrunch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHAT WERE GHETTOS IN THE HOLOCAUST?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/ghettos-of-the-holocaust\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3326\">Ghettos<\/a> were city districts in which the Jewish were forced to live, and which were used to isolate them from the rest of the European populations.\u00a0 The ghettos were surrounded by walls or fences to prevent Jewish and non-Jewish people from interacting and to forcibly contain the Jewish.\u00a0 In total, there were over 800 ghettos established across Nazi controlled Europe during the time period.\u00a0 The conditions of the ghettos were miserable.\u00a0 Jewish families, who were forced to live in them, faced: overcrowding, starvation, lack of medical supplies, lack of proper sanitation and running water, lack of proper clothing to deal with extreme cold, spread of infectious diseases and forced to labor for the Nazis.\u00a0 One of the most famous ghettos of the Holocaust was in Warsaw, Poland.\u00a0 It was here that the Holocaust also witnessed one of the greatest examples of resistance against the Nazis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Ghettos-of-the-Holocaust-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Ghettos of the Holocaust\" class=\"wp-image-5230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Ghettos-of-the-Holocaust-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Ghettos-of-the-Holocaust-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Ghettos-of-the-Holocaust-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Ghettos-of-the-Holocaust.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">View of the Frysztak Ghetto in the Krakow District. (1939 to 1942) (Colorized by historycrunch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WARSAW GHETTO UPRISING &#8211; SUMMARY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was one of the most significant events of the Holocaust and symbolized Jewish resistance in a time of brutality and devastation.\u00a0 In fact, it was the largest revolt by Jewish people in all of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/world-war-ii\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"21\">World War II<\/a>\u00a0and the Holocaust.\u00a0 The uprising began on April 19th, 1943 when Jewish prisoners inside of the ghetto refused to surrender to Nazi officials.\u00a0 As part of the \u2018Final Solution\u2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/category\/nazi-germany\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"47\">Nazi Germany<\/a> was removing Jewish people from ghettos across Nazi-controlled territory and transporting the prisoners to concentration and death camps.\u00a0 The prisoners of the Warsaw Ghetto were supposed to surrender themselves to J\u00fcrgen Stroop, the local\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/ss-schutztaffel\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3344\">SS<\/a>\u00a0commander, and were then to be transported to Treblinka, a death camp northeast of Warsaw.\u00a0 However, on April 19th, the prisoners in the ghetto refused to surrender.\u00a0 By this point, many in the ghettos had become aware of the\u00a0death camps\u00a0and knew that the Nazis were going to send them to their deaths.\u00a0 As a result, members of the Warsaw Ghetto united in their resistance in order to prevent their extermination in the gas chambers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 19th, the SS and local police entered the ghetto to begin the process of transporting the prisoners to the camps.&nbsp; Instead, they were met by resistance fighters who attacked with Molotov cocktails, hand grenades and guns that had been smuggled into the ghetto.&nbsp; On the first day of the uprising, the Germans suffered nearly 60 dead and were forced to retreat from the ghetto.&nbsp; They reorganized and carried out a series of military operations in the days that followed.&nbsp; For example, on April 22nd, the Germans again moved into the ghetto and after being met with heavy resistance began to systematically burn houses and apartment blocks.&nbsp; The fires devastated the resistance fighters with many dying from the flames and smoke inhalation.&nbsp; As a result, the remaining resisters were forced out from their dugouts and hiding places.&nbsp; Finally, the uprising ended on May 16th, 1943 when J\u00fcrgen Stroop detonated an explosive that destroyed the Great Synagogue of Warsaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Warsaw-Ghetto-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Warsaw Ghetto\" class=\"wp-image-5358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Warsaw-Ghetto-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Warsaw-Ghetto-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Warsaw-Ghetto-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Warsaw-Ghetto.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">German SS soldiers during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprisisng.
