(Colorized by historycrunch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHY WAS FRANZ FERDINAND ASSASSINATED?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As stated above, Franz Ferdinand was the Archduke of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/austria-hungary-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"870\">Austria-Hungary<\/a>\u00a0and the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne in the years before <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/world-war-i-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1043\">World War I<\/a>.\u00a0 Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated on June 28th, 1914 in Sarajevo, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia and Herzegovina while there on a visit to inspect the military forces.\u00a0 The assassin was a Serbian nationalist named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/gavrilo-princip\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1028\">Gavrilo Princip<\/a>.\u00a0 Just nineteen years old at the time, Princip was a member of the Black Hand.\u00a0 The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/black-hand-and-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"770\">Black Hand<\/a>\u00a0was a Serbian nationalist organization that existed in the early part of the 20th century. The Black Hand was first created in August of 1901, by members of the Royal Serbian Army.\u00a0 It was a secret society that worked to promote Serbian nationalism.\u00a0 They were opposed to Austro-Hungarian influence in the Balkans, which was the name for the southeastern region of Europe.\u00a0 As such, the Black Hand planned to assassinate Franz Ferdinand as a form of protest towards Austria-Hungary.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Serbian nationalism grew stronger in the years leading up to 1914 and the outbreak of World War I.\u00a0 For instance, the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/bosnian-crisis-of-1908\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"760\">Bosnian Crisis of 1908<\/a> was an important event in the Balkans that increased tensions.\u00a0 In general, the\u00a0Bosnian Crisis involved the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina by Austria-Hungary.\u00a0 This means that Austria took control over the two territories.\u00a0 Previously they had been controlled by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/ottoman-empire-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"880\">Ottoman Empire<\/a>\u00a0but by this time the Ottoman Empire was in decline and losing its authority in the region.\u00a0 Austria\u2019s annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina created a crisis not only with the leadership of the Ottoman Empire, but also with other surrounding European nations including <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/italy-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"839\">Italy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/russia-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"842\">Russia<\/a>, and Serbia.\u00a0 In fact, Serbian nationalists (like those in the Black Hand) resented the Austro-Hungarian takeover of Bosnia and Herzegovina. \u00a0This created lingering anger among the members of the Black Hand, who wanted to unify and liberate Slavic people in the Balkans.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Assassination-of-Franz-Ferdinand-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Assassination of Franz Ferdinand\" class=\"wp-image-1324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Assassination-of-Franz-Ferdinand-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Assassination-of-Franz-Ferdinand-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Assassination-of-Franz-Ferdinand-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Assassination-of-Franz-Ferdinand.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Franz Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo just minutes before the assassination.
