{"id":803,"date":"2017-06-22T06:56:30","date_gmt":"2017-06-22T06:56:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/?p=803"},"modified":"2026-04-24T07:23:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T07:23:56","slug":"shell-shock-in-world-war-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/shell-shock-in-world-war-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Shell Shock in World War I: A Detailed Summary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Shell Shock was a significant aspect of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"7640\">World War I<\/a>\u00a0and played an important role in the history of the war.\u00a0 More specifically, Shell Shock was a medical condition that soldiers on the frontlines of World War I suffered from, due to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/life-in-the-trenches-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"794\">life in the trenches<\/a>.\u00a0 It was especially related to stresses and anxiety that soldiers on the frontlines of World War I had to continually face.\u00a0 The term \u2018Shell Shock\u2019 was first used by British psychologist Charles Samuel Myers in relation to the set of symptoms that soldiers presented with.\u00a0 Historians have identified several causes, treatments and impacts for Shell Shock, which weren\u2019t immediately understood in World War I.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CAUSES OF SHELL SHOCK IN WORLD WAR I<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Life in the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/trenches-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"788\">trenches of World War I<\/a> was miserable and difficult for the soldiers that had to endure the horrible conditions.\u00a0 From the mud, rain, rats, and the constant threat of enemy attack, life in the trenches was not easy.\u00a0 What made it even more miserable was the artillery shelling that soldiers in the trenches had to live through.\u00a0 The use of artillery in <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/world-war-i-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1043\">World War I<\/a> was common and some estimates put the total number of artillery shells fired in World War I as high as 8 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Shell-Shock-WW1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Shell Shock WW1\" class=\"wp-image-1571\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Shell-Shock-WW1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Shell-Shock-WW1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Shell-Shock-WW1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Shell-Shock-WW1.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">it is estimated that as many as 8 billion artillery shells were fired during the course of World War I. (Colorized by historycrunch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in his book \u2018All Quiet on the Western Front\u2019, Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran of World War I described the situation facing World War I soldiers.&nbsp; He stated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe wake up in the middle of the night. The earth booms. Heavy fire is falling on us. We crouch into corners. We distinguish shells of every calibre.&nbsp; Each man lays hold of his things and looks again every minute to reassure himself that they are still there. The dug-out heaves, the night roars and flashes. We look at each other in the momentary flashes of light, and with pale faces and pressed lips shake our heads.&nbsp; Every man is aware of the heavy shells tearing down the parapet, rooting up the embankment and demolishing the upper layers of concrete.
