During this time, European nations sent explorers across the world’s oceans in search of new trade routes, new lands, and new sources of wealth. The Age of Exploration fundamentally changed the relationship between Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, and is considered one of the most important events in the history of the western world. The four European nations most commonly associated with the beginning of the Age of Exploration were Portugal, Spain, France, and England. However, the Dutch emerged as a major force in exploration and trade during the 17th century and played a significant role in shaping the later stages of the era. Like the other major exploring nations, the Netherlands had access to experienced sailors, a strong maritime tradition, and well-developed sea ports that made long-distance ocean voyages possible.

‘Ortelius World Map’ by Abraham Ortelius. The Netherlands in the late 16th and early 17th centuries was one of the most commercially advanced societies in Europe. Dutch merchants were experienced traders who had long been involved in the movement of goods across Europe, and they were eager to gain direct access to the spices, silks, and other luxury goods of Asia that were generating enormous wealth for Portugal and Spain. For much of the 16th century, Dutch merchants had been purchasing spices from Portuguese traders at the port of Lisbon and reselling them across northern Europe. However, as political tensions between the Netherlands and Spain grew, access to those Portuguese-controlled trade networks became increasingly difficult and expensive. This pushed Dutch merchants to seek their own direct sea routes to Asia and to cut out the Portuguese middlemen entirely.

The result was an explosion of Dutch commercial activity on the world’s oceans. Unlike Portugal and Spain, whose exploration efforts were largely funded and directed by royal governments, Dutch exploration was driven heavily by private merchants and trading companies. This gave Dutch expansion a distinctly commercial character and made it one of the most efficient and aggressive trading empires in history.

‘A Dutch Fluyt’ by Wenceslaus Hollar. Founded in 1602, the VOC was one of the first and most powerful joint-stock companies in history. A joint-stock company is a type of business in which many different investors pool their money together to fund a venture, sharing both the risks and the profits. The VOC was granted a monopoly by the Dutch government on all trade between the Netherlands and Asia, meaning no other Dutch company was allowed to compete with it in that part of the world. This gave the VOC enormous power and resources.

The VOC operated its own ships, maintained its own army, built forts, and negotiated treaties with foreign rulers, functioning almost like a government in many of the regions where it operated. At the height of its power the VOC was the largest and wealthiest trading company in the world. It established a major base of operations on the island of Java in what is today Indonesia, and from there it built up a vast network of trading posts and colonies across Asia, including in India, Sri Lanka, Japan, and South Africa. The goods that the VOC shipped back to Europe, particularly spices such as pepper, nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon, generated extraordinary profits and made the Netherlands one of the wealthiest nations in the world during the 17th century. The period of Dutch dominance in trade and exploration during this era is often referred to by historians as the Dutch Golden Age.

Flag of the Dutch East India Company

Henry Hudson and the Search for a Northwest Passage

One of the most famous explorers associated with the Dutch in the Age of Exploration was Henry Hudson, an English navigator who sailed in the service of the Dutch East India Company. Hudson was born in England in the 16th century, with his exact birth date thought to be around 1540. He was a skilled sailor and navigator who became well known for his efforts to find a northern passage to Asia.

In 1609, the Dutch East India Company hired Hudson to find a safe northwesterly route to China for trade. His fleet set sail and initially attempted to navigate around the Arctic, operating on the belief that summer temperatures would melt enough ice to allow passage. When ice blocked the planned route, Hudson redirected the voyage westward through North America instead. This change of course led Hudson to explore the area surrounding what is today New York. Several of the geographical features he encountered during this voyage were named after him, including the Hudson River and Hudson Bay. His explorations of the region opened the door to Dutch colonization in the greater New York area, and it was largely thanks to Hudson’s voyage that the Dutch were able to establish the settlement of New Amsterdam on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. New Amsterdam would later be taken over by the English and renamed New York, but its Dutch origins are still reflected in many of the place names found across the region today. Hudson went on to a further voyage in 1610 funded by the British East India Company, during which his crew mutinied and cast him adrift. He was never seen again and was reported dead in 1611.

‘Engraving of Henry Hudson’ (1885)

Abel Tasman and the Exploration of the Pacific

Another significant Dutch explorer of the Age of Exploration was Abel Tasman. Tasman was a Dutch sailor and explorer who sailed in the service of the VOC during the mid-17th century. He is best remembered for being the first European explorer to reach the islands of present-day New Zealand and Tasmania, the latter of which was named after him. Tasman also explored parts of Fiji and Tonga during his voyages, and his journeys gave Europeans their first knowledge of a large part of the southwestern Pacific Ocean. His explorations helped establish Dutch knowledge of the geography of the Pacific and contributed to the VOC’s broader effort to map and control the sea routes of the eastern world.

Dutch Colonies and New Amsterdam

Beyond Asia, the Dutch also established colonies in other parts of the world during the Age of Exploration. In the Americas, the Dutch founded the colony of New Netherland, which covered parts of what are today the states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut. The most important settlement within New Netherland was New Amsterdam, founded in 1626 on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. New Amsterdam quickly grew into a busy and diverse trading port, reflecting the commercial nature of Dutch colonialism. The Dutch also established colonies in the Caribbean, in parts of Brazil, and along the southern coast of Africa, where the VOC set up a supply station at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652 that would eventually grow into the city of Cape Town in modern-day South Africa.

‘The planting of cross by Bartholomew Dias in 1488’ by F. The Netherlands demonstrated that a relatively small country with a strong commercial culture and an innovative approach to trade could compete with and even surpass much larger empires. The Dutch East India Company was a genuinely revolutionary institution that changed how international trade was organized and financed, and its influence can be seen in the development of modern business and financial systems. The routes and colonies that Dutch explorers and traders established connected Europe with Asia, Africa, and the Americas in new and lasting ways. At the same time, like all of the European powers involved in the Age of Exploration, the Dutch expansion came at a significant cost to the peoples of the regions they colonized and traded in. For all of these reasons, the Dutch role in the Age of Exploration remains an important chapter in the history of the modern world.

‘A Naval Encounter between Dutch and Spanish Warships’ by Cornelis Verbeeck.
