He is best known for his rounding of the Cape of Good Hope, which proved that ships could sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Indian Ocean and onward toward Asia. He is believed to have come from a family with a seafaring background, as several of his relatives were also involved in Portuguese exploration. Very little is known about his early life in detail, but by the time he became prominent in Portuguese exploration, Dias had clearly developed strong skills as a sailor and navigator. Portugal during this period was the leading nation in European exploration, actively pushing its explorers further south along the coast of Africa in search of a sea route to Asia. Prince Henry the Navigator had established the foundations of Portugal’s exploration program in the earlier decades of the 15th century, and by the time Dias came of age the country had already explored much of the western coast of Africa. Dias came of age in this environment of active exploration and grew into one of its most capable participants.

Before his famous voyage, Dias had already demonstrated his abilities as a sailor in the service of the Portuguese crown. He is known to have served as a knight of the royal court and as a superintendent of the royal warehouses in Lisbon. He also commanded a ship on an earlier Portuguese voyage along the African coast, giving him valuable experience with the conditions and challenges of ocean exploration in that region.

‘Saint Vincent Panels’ by Nuno Gonçalves. Dias commanded a fleet of three ships and was given the mission by the Portuguese King John II to sail further south along the African coast than any European had gone before, with the ultimate goal of finding a sea route around Africa to the trading markets of Asia and India. Portugal had been working toward this goal for decades, with successive explorers pushing further and further south along the African coastline, and the voyage of Dias was intended to finally push past the southernmost point of the continent.

Dias and his fleet made their way south along the African coast, passing beyond the furthest points that earlier Portuguese explorers had reached. As they pushed further south, the conditions became increasingly difficult, with strong winds, rough seas, and cold temperatures making the voyage extremely challenging. In January of 1488, a severe storm drove the fleet far out to sea and pushed them southward for several days. When Dias was finally able to turn the ships back toward land, he discovered that he had been blown past the southern tip of Africa entirely and had entered waters east of the continent. He had, without intending to, rounded the Cape of Good Hope.

Dias sailed eastward and then northward along the eastern coast of Africa, realizing that the route to Asia was now open before him. However, his crew was exhausted and running low on supplies, and they refused to sail any further. Facing a near mutiny, Dias was forced to turn back and return to Portugal. Before doing so, he erected a stone cross or padrão at a point on the eastern African coast to mark how far his expedition had reached. On the return voyage, Dias caught his first clear view of the southern tip of Africa, the dramatic rocky headland that he reportedly named the Cape of Storms because of the violent weather that had driven his fleet around it. However, upon his return to Portugal King John II renamed it the Cape of Good Hope, reflecting the hope it offered for finding a sea route to India.

Dias returned to Lisbon in December of 1488, having completed one of the most significant voyages in the history of European exploration. Although he had not reached India, he had proven that a sea route around Africa was possible, which was the critical piece of knowledge that made all subsequent voyages to Asia viable.

‘The planting of cross by Bartholomew Dias in 1488’ by F. Instead, that historic mission was given to Vasco da Gama, who used the knowledge and route that Dias had established to become the first European to reach India by sea in 1498. Dias did play a role in the preparations for that voyage, helping to oversee the construction of two of the ships in da Gama’s fleet.

Dias later participated in another major Portuguese expedition to the region. In 1500 he was part of the fleet commanded by Pedro Alvares Cabral, which was sent to follow up on da Gama’s successful voyage to India. On the outward journey, Cabral’s fleet sailed so far west in the Atlantic that it made landfall on the coast of what is today Brazil, marking the European discovery of that territory. From Brazil the fleet continued southward and then eastward toward Africa. However, tragedy struck as the fleet rounded the Cape of Good Hope. A severe storm struck the fleet on May 29th, 1500, sinking four of the ships. Bartolomeu Dias was aboard one of the ships that was lost in the storm, and he died at sea near the very cape he had been the first European to round just twelve years earlier. He was approximately 50 years old at the time of his death.

‘Vasco da Gama before the Samorim of Calicut’ by Veloso Salgado. His rounding of the Cape of Good Hope in 1488 was one of the most important achievements of the entire era, as it proved definitively that ships could sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Indian Ocean by going around the southern tip of Africa. This discovery opened the sea route between Europe and Asia that Portugal and other European nations had been searching for throughout the 15th century.

The consequences of Dias’s achievement were significant. His voyage directly inspired and made possible the voyage of Vasco da Gama to India in 1497 and 1498, which in turn opened up the spice trade between Europe and Asia and helped establish Portugal as the dominant colonial and trading power in the Indian Ocean for over a century. The sea route that Dias pioneered also helped redirect the flow of global trade away from the overland Silk Road and the Mediterranean routes controlled by rival powers, fundamentally reshaping the economic geography of the world. For all of these reasons, Bartolomeu Dias remains one of the most important explorers of the Age of Exploration, even though his contribution is sometimes overshadowed by those of Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus. Regardless, Dias played an important role in launching European imperialism in South Africa.

‘The Inspiration of Christopher Columbus’ by José María Obregón.
