{"id":940,"date":"2015-09-03T18:02:58","date_gmt":"2015-09-03T18:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/?p=940"},"modified":"2026-04-22T16:02:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T16:02:33","slug":"second-battle-of-ypres-in-world-war-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/second-battle-of-ypres-in-world-war-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Second\u00a0Battle of Ypres\u00a0in\u00a0World War I: A Detailed Summary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Second\u00a0Battle of Ypres\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"7640\">World War I<\/a>\u00a0was a major battle in 1915 that took place on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/western-front-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"921\">Western Front<\/a>.\u00a0 This was the line of fighting that occurred along the trenches that stretched throughout Belgium and northern France.\u00a0 The Western Front was the site of some of the largest battles of World War I, including the Second\u00a0Battle of Ypres.\u00a0 Today, the Second Battle of Ypres is remembered for being an important battle between the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/allied-powers-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"812\">Allied Powers<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/britain-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"828\">Britain<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/france-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"836\">France<\/a>\u00a0and Belgium against the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/central-powers-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"852\">Central Power<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/germany-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"877\">Germany<\/a>.\u00a0 Historically, the battle was also important to the nation of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/canada-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"832\">Canada<\/a>, since they participated in it as a Dominion of the British Empire.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHEN DID THE SECOND BATTLE OF YPRES IN WORLD WAR I OCCUR?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Second\u00a0Battle of Ypres\u00a0occurred in 1915 from April 22nd until May 25th.\u00a0 Ypres is a town in western Belgium that saw intense fighting in World War I between the Allied and German forces.\u00a0 For instance, it involved at least three major battles \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/first-battle-of-ypres-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"937\">First Battle of Ypres<\/a>, Second Battle of Ypres and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/third-battle-of-ypres-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"953\">Third Battle of Ypres<\/a>.\u00a0 The Second\u00a0Battle of Ypres\u00a0followed the First Battle of Ypres, which occurred in October and November of 1914.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Western-Front-World-War-I-Map-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Western Front World War I Map\" class=\"wp-image-1563\" style=\"width:1168px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Western-Front-World-War-I-Map-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Western-Front-World-War-I-Map-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Western-Front-World-War-I-Map-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Western-Front-World-War-I-Map.png 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Map of the Battles of the Western Front in World War I. (Created by historycrunch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE SECOND BATTLE OF YPRES IN WORLD WAR I?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Second\u00a0Battle of Ypres\u00a0unfolded as a series of five conflicts, which included: Battle of Gravenstafel, Battle of Kitchener\u2019s Wood, Battle of St. Julien, Battle of Frezenberg, and the Battle of Bellewaarde.\u00a0 These conflicts saw intense fighting, but also involved the first use of <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/poison-gas-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1004\">poisonous gas<\/a> on the Western Front.\u00a0 Germany introduced\u00a0chlorine gas\u00a0canisters into the battle on the first day of fighting, when they used the deadly gas against the French troops.\u00a0 The Germans first advanced on Ypres with the Battle of Gravenstafel Ridge on April 22nd.\u00a0 They did so by first releasing canisters of chlorine gas across the battlefield.\u00a0 The Germans had to use the prevailing winds of the time to allow it to push the gas towards the Allied lines.\u00a0 The poisonous gas was deadly, especially due to it being heavier than air.\u00a0 This caused it to be pushed down into the Allied <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/trenches-of-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"788\">trenches<\/a> and caught many of the early victims off guard.\u00a0 For instance, the French soldiers, which were the initial victims of the gas, suffered terribly.\u00a0 They struggled to grasp for air and coughed uncontrollably.\u00a0 In all, historians estimate that the French suffered as many as 3,000 casualties in this initial attack, including between 800 and 1,400 deaths.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Second&nbsp;Battle of Ypres&nbsp;continued for several more weeks, and finally ended on May 25th.&nbsp; The town of Ypres was essentially destroyed from artillery fire.&nbsp; The final result of the battle saw the Allied forces (British) withdraw 3 miles close to Ypres.&nbsp; As such, Germany gained very little for the loss of life that resulted from the battle.&nbsp; For this reason, historians view the Second&nbsp;Battle of Ypres&nbsp;as an example of the \u2018waste of humanity\u2019 that World War I proved famous for.&nbsp; For example, the Second Battle of Ypres cost the lives of many people on both sides.&nbsp; German casualties totaled over 34,000, French casualties totaled about 18,000 and Canadian casualties totaled almost 6,000.&nbsp; In all, it is estimated that the British forces suffered nearly 60,000 casualties.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Poison-Gas-in-Wiorld-War-I-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Poison Gas in World War I\" class=\"wp-image-1636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Poison-Gas-in-Wiorld-War-I-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Poison-Gas-in-Wiorld-War-I-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Poison-Gas-in-Wiorld-War-I-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Poison-Gas-in-Wiorld-War-I.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Germany used chlorine gas during the Second Battle of Ypres in World War I in 1915.
