{"id":992,"date":"2017-06-22T05:33:33","date_gmt":"2017-06-22T05:33:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/?p=992"},"modified":"2026-04-24T07:21:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T07:21:23","slug":"ace-pilots-of-world-war-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/ace-pilots-of-world-war-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Ace Pilots of\u00a0World War I: A Detailed Summary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ace pilots of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"7640\">World War I<\/a>\u00a0were an important topic in the history of the war.\u00a0 In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/airplanes-in-world-war-i\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"995\">airplanes<\/a> were first developed just before the start of World War I and aircraft technology further developed as the war progressed.\u00a0 This led to many \u2018ace\u2019 pilots from several countries gaining recognition for their ability to \u2018dogfight\u2019 in World War I air battles.\u00a0 World War I was a deadly conflict as shown by the millions of military and civil casualties it caused.\u00a0 The large number of casualties was the result, in part, of the development and use of weaponry that took place during the war.\u00a0 The ace pilots of World War I played a key role in World War I and influenced its outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHY WERE SOME WORLD WAR I PILOTS CALLED &#8216;ACES&#8217;?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The development of airplane technology during <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/world-war-i-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1043\">World War I<\/a> led to the creation of the fighter airplane.\u00a0 These\u00a0airplanes were used for \u2018dogfights\u2019, where were mid-air plane-to-plane battles.\u00a0 Early mid-air battles were either not possible or basic due to the limitations of weapons.\u00a0 For instance, early models of fighter airplanes did not have mounted machine guns.\u00a0 Instead, the pilots used handheld weapons, which proved difficult when also flying a plane.\u00a0 As such, shooting down an enemy plane was nearly impossible early on.\u00a0 However, as the weapons technology improved on the fighter airplanes, the ability of World War I pilots became much more important.\u00a0 For instance, once machine guns were reliably mounted to the front of fighter airplanes, the pilots were better able to shoot down enemy airplanes.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French newspapers in World War I first used the term \u2018ace\u2019 for pilots that had downed at least five enemy airplanes.&nbsp; For instance, the first person to receive the designation was French pilot Adolphe P\u00e9goud.&nbsp; However, the most famous ace pilot from World War I was Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen.&nbsp; He flew for the German Air Force and was more commonly known as the \u2018Red Baron\u2019.&nbsp; As such, the term \u2018ace\u2019 became used for any pilots that had downed at least five enemy airplanes.&nbsp; Some of the most successful pilots of World War I had downed numerous enemy planes.&nbsp; Regardless, the life for a World War I pilot was usually short-lived due to the dangerous nature of aircrafts at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"721\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Ace-Pilots-WW1-721x1024.png\" alt=\"Ace Pilots WW1\" class=\"wp-image-1516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Ace-Pilots-WW1-721x1024.png 721w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Ace-Pilots-WW1-211x300.png 211w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Ace-Pilots-WW1.png 760w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 721px) 100vw, 721px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Manfred von Richthofen (Red Baron) from Germany was the top ace pilot of World War I.
