{"id":998,"date":"2018-07-07T05:45:10","date_gmt":"2018-07-07T05:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/?p=998"},"modified":"2024-04-30T01:54:18","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T01:54:18","slug":"airships-in-world-war-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/airships-in-world-war-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Airships in World War I: A Detailed Summary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">Airships in World War I a significant role alongside other new aircraft technology, such as airplanes.\u00a0 An airship is any aircraft that is \u2018lighter-than-air\u2019 and can operate under its own powers.\u00a0 Also commonly known as \u2018blimps\u2019, airships were first used in the 19th century and the technology of airship construction continued to improve in the decades before World War I.\u00a0 This included the use of rigid-airships, which had a strong frame under the canopy of the airship. (Colorized by historycrunch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ROLE OF AIRSHIPS IN WORLD WAR I<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Airships in World War I played a variety of important roles.&nbsp; For instance, airships in World War I were primarily used for either reconnaissance missions or bombing runs.&nbsp; Many of the European Powers of World War I used airships for these different purposes.&nbsp; With that said, airships never reached the popularity or versatility of airplanes in World War I.&nbsp; This was due to the limitations of airships in the war.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The first main limitations of the airships in World War I, was that the airships were generally filled with hydrogen, which gave them their \u2018lighter-than-air\u2019 quality.\u00a0 While helium was safer, hydrogen was more often used because it was cheaper and more readily available.\u00a0 However, hydrogen is incredibly flammable and when combined with bombs and other weapons from World War I, it made the airships dangerous vehicles on the frontlines.\u00a0 As such, countries generally did not use airships during the frontline battles of World War I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Second, airships were slow to maneuver and struggled to make quick adjustments, which is often needed in situations of war.\u00a0 This made the targeting capabilities of the airships poor.\u00a0 As such, while some countries used airships on bombing runs, they were most commonly used as lookouts and for reconnaissance of enemy positions.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">With all of that noted,&nbsp;Germany&nbsp;still famously used airships (Zeppelins) in World War I as a means of carrying out bombing raids against Britain.&nbsp; These raids first began in 1915 and continued until 1917, when airplanes replaced the airships.&nbsp; The Zeppelin bombing raids had little impact on the militaristic outcome of World War I, but proved effective in terms of creating fear and panic among the general British population.&nbsp; Britain ultimately countered the German bombing raids with effective defensive measures.&nbsp; Regardless, historians estimate that Germany carried out 51 different airship bombing raids in World War I against Britain.&nbsp; In all the raids killed 557 people and injured another 1,358 more.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"693\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Airships-WW1-Poster-693x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Airships WW1 Poster\" class=\"wp-image-1286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Airships-WW1-Poster-693x1024.jpg 693w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Airships-WW1-Poster-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Airships-WW1-Poster-768x1135.jpg 768w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Airships-WW1-Poster-1039x1536.jpg 1039w, https:\/\/crunchlearning.com\/website_ec2cbfb0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Airships-WW1-Poster.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 693px) 100vw, 693px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">British First World War poster of a Zeppelin.
